NCAA Cancels Division 1 Cross Country ChampionshipsPublished by
All Fall NCAA Championships Have Been Canceled By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor/Photo John Nepolitan The bleeding never stopped. One college conference after another this week has analyzed the data and decided to postpone or cancel fall sports. On Thursday alone, the Southland Conference, West Coast Conference, Big Sky Conference, Western Athletic Conference and Horizon League were among those making the call. This, after the Big Ten and Pac-12 made the painful decisions on Tuesday. With at least 23 out of 31 conferences pulling out of the fall, the NCAA had little choice but to cancel fall sports championship events for cross country, volleybal and men's and women's soccer. NCAA President Mark Emmert said he believes fall sports can be salvaged with competition, in some form, next spring. "If we modify the model, shrink the bracket sizes, use pre-determined sites instead of running kids around the country, use bubbles or semi-bubbles for things like volleyball or soccer, there's a way to do it," Emmert said. The men's NCAA cross country championships go back to 1938 and were only skipped once, in 1943, during World War II. The women's championship dates to 1981. |
