Arkansas senior Lauren Gregory, an NCAA Division 1 cross country and indoor track All-American along with being a member of multiple national championship teams, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss opening the indoor track season Dec. 3 with a personal-best 15:34.58 in the 5,000 meters at the Wooo Pig Classic at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, which followed her 19th-place performance in 19:46.1 in the 6-kilometer race Nov. 20 at the Division 1 cross country final at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. Gregory reflects on how meaningful it was to have spectators allowed at Randal Tyson Track Center after the absence of fans during the indoor season earlier in the year. She also expresses gratitude for the pacing of teammate of Krissy Gear and having such a small field that was able to work together throughout the race. Gregory explains how rewarding it was to be able to rely on her fitness from cross country season to be able to improve on her previous-best effort from January and achieve the second-fastest time in Arkansas indoor history and the No. 6 performance in the country this season. She revisits earning All-America cross country honors for the first time after appearing at her fourth national championship meet and how grateful Gregory was to have Isabel Van Camp achieve a career breakthrough and finish 37th to also be recognized as an All-American. Gregory shares how much improvement and development Arkansas demonstrated from placing sixth Oct. 15 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Tallahassee to earning eighth overall at the national final five weeks later. She analyzes how significant it was for the Razorbacks to have competed at Apalachee Regional Park ahead of the national championship meet and how instrumental it was to have favorable weather after Gregory had competed during her career at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, Ind., where Arkansas won its national title in 2019, as well as the Thomas Zimmer Championship course in Madison, Wis., in 2018. Gregory shares her immense pride in the Razorbacks extending their Southeastern Conference title streak to nine in a row and how thankful she was for her teammates rising to the occasion to preserve that championship legacy. She speaks about her ability to train consistently during the fall and the excitement for having the opportunity to contend for another Division 1 women's indoor team title, and Arkansas' potential in the distance medley relay, after the Razorbacks placed second in the event, along with Gregory taking runner-up in the 3,000 last season. Gregory also reacts to the announcement that Arkansas women's coach Lance Harter would be stepping down following the conclusion of the 2023 outdoor season and how grateful she is to have him as a mentor.
