Oregon Transplant Erin Clark Is at Home in Colorado

Published by Mark Bloom/Runnersworld.com October 28, 2015

After unleashing a strong kick to win the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville on October 17, Erin Clark of the University of Colorado is expected to battle at the front of the national cross-country final on November 21. The Buffaloes ended up seventh in the team standings each of the past two years but are currently ranked No. 3 and will contend for a podium spot in Louisville.

Last fall Clark ran No. 1 for CU all season and claimed All-American honors with a 31st place nationals finish. She also has a personal best of 9:59.67 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Clark grew up in Eugene, Oregon, otherwise known as TrackTown USA, but she chose to head to Boulder for her collegiate running. Running Times spoke with Clark on October 27, three days before the Pac-12 championships.

Running Times: Your hometown is known as a mecca of track and field and distance running, and South Eugene High has a great legacy. When did you start taking the sport seriously and decide you wanted to pursue running at a really high level?

Erin Clark: I would say it happened gradually. I started running for my middle school and pretty quickly knew I was good at it—I ran pretty fast and placed pretty well in my first few meets. So I think it just kept progressing as I went along. I committed fully to cross country and track and not combining with soccer my sophomore year in high school. That fall was a big breakout cross-country season and an eye-opener to the fact that, yeah, I do have the potential to do this in college and it can be something I’m really good at. So it’s been a lot of little steps along the way where I’ve had good performances and realized I could make it to the next level. And definitely enjoying it along the way has helped as well.
